Hello I’m Mandeep Atwal, and in 2012 i was appointed as the UK Teacher Business Manager for Microsoft Education. I am really fortunate to be in a role where I work alongside a wealth of people who are responsible for the strategic enhancement of technology in learning.
I am a teacher by nature and have been a secondary RE teacher for six years, where I developed ‘Young Voices’, a school based project focused on how young people could use technology to encourage open debates between pupils from different ethnic and religious backgrounds; from anywhere in the world. This project was recognized by Microsoft Partners in Learning, and awarded both the Microsoft UK and European Innovative Teacher's Award in 2009. Young Voices then went on to achieve first place at the Microsoft Worldwide Innovative Education Forum Award in 2009 for the category ‘Community’.
In 2010, my quest for exploring new ways to make learning fun and meaningful for students truly began when I joined TakingITGlobal as their UK Programs Manager. In this role I was able to support educators across the world to utilize technology to create transformative international learning experiences for their students. This included coordinating ‘Shout’, an environmental education program in collaboration with Microsoft and the Smithsonian and designing and delivering the accredited TIG Student Voice e-courses.
I have been very fortunate to have travelled to different parts of the world to meet with great teachers, educators and school leaders who have all shaped and transformed learning.
In my spare time i love to travel. If i have the opportunity to explore somewhere new i’m there!! I also love going for long walks, going to the cinema/ theatre and yes at times i enjoy curling up to a good old fashioned book :-) Recently, I’ve developed a very outdoorsy part to my personality and often like to go surfing (well body boarding), cliff jumping, skiing and I’ve tried my hand at mountain climbing too (actually more like a walk). I’m training for a 79k charity cycle ride and I can honestly say it’s the hardest thing I have done to date.
